About the Role
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is seeking a full-time ArcGIS Geospatial Researcher, with a maritime focus, to support its conflict mapping program and geospatial analysis of ongoing conflicts and national security threats.
Responsibilities:
Provide expert geospatial analysis of ongoing conflicts, synthesizing multiple open sources.
Compile, manipulate, and analyze geospatial data, primarily in ArcGIS.
Leverage ISW's satellite imagery and remote sensing partnerships.
Support long-term research projects and forecasts.
Mentor and manage interns and provide GIS training to other staff.
Help edit intelligence products and follow data handling and storage procedures.
Design and maintain GIS databases.
Build reports, maps, applications, and visualizations.
Use scripting to refine GIS data pipelines.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a field related to ISW's core mission and research agenda.
Excellent working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS at a minimum.
Experience with multi-source geospatial analysis.
Ability to refine requirements and select appropriate technology with other analysts.
Ability to independently develop and manage proprietary datasets.
Raster analysis and satellite imagery analysis skills are required.
Pluses: GIS application development, Python, and critical language skills (Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, Persian, etc.).
Location: Washington, DC, United States (hybrid). Salary: $70,000–$80,000 per year.
