Duties As a Cartographer, you will: Interpret and apply a wide variety of cartographic and mapping data using GIS software to maintain the national navigational database used to produce nautical charts; compile information using established charting policies, standards, and procedures documented in the Nautical Charting Manual. Research historical information and charting records to resolve discrepancies between existing charted information and new data. Use knowledge of map projections and datums (horizontal and vertical) to process and transform incoming mapping data for nautical charting; produce electronic navigational charts and use validation software/procedures to ensure conformance with international standards. Review the work of other Marine Chart Division cartographers and contractors for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with the Nautical Chart Manual; recommend process, procedure, and software improvements. NOTE: Duties are described at the full performance level of ZP-3; ZP-2 is developmental leading to that level. Compensation and schedule Salary: $57,736 – $133,142 per year (ZP 2–3) Work schedule: Full-time Telework eligible as determined by agency policy; not a remote job Travel: up to 25% domestic or foreign may be required Appointment: Permanent Qualifications (high level) Positive education requirement for the 1370 Cartography series (degree in cartography or related major with required coursework, or equivalent combination of education and experience), plus specialized experience at the ZP-2/GS-07 or ZP-3/GS-11 level as described on USAJOBS.
