Job Summary
The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified, motivated Geographic Information System (GIS) Supervisor to perform administrative and technical activities to ensure the design and functionality of Geographic Information System hardware and software resources within the context of programs and policy directives. The GIS Supervisor must have extensive knowledge of terminology, methods and practices used in GIS mapping and addressing systems as well as knowledge of the standards for GIS indexing systems according to legal standards, local, state and departmental specifications and guidelines. The GIS Supervisor exercises considerable discretion and independent judgement in their work. The GIS Supervisor also assists in the coordination of hardware, software, and data cabling activities, service vendor contracts, planning and organizing system development through subordinate staff. This position is a supervisory level job.

Minimum Qualifications (one option required)
Option A: Lead/supervisory experience in GIS or IT; experience creating/editing GIS databases (Esri, ArcGIS, MapInfo) including SQL/Oracle; spatial analysis and data extraction; database reporting software (e.g. Crystal Reports, ArcGIS reporting).
Option B: Lead/supervisory experience in GIS or IT + Associate degree in GIS or related IT field.
Option C: Lead/supervisory experience in GIS or IT + GIS Certificate/Certification (e.g. Alabama Certified Mapper, GISCI, GISP).
Option D: Lead/supervisory experience in GIS or IT + GIS Specialist in the Merit System.
Typical Job Duties
Maintain department efficiencies: meetings, productivity tracking, reports, policy/procedure updates, physical and digital files
Enter/modify basic and complex GIS records (property changes, ROWs, roads, annexations, subdivisions) using coordinate geometry and tabular entry
Research, verify, and assign GIS-related information for database entry
Engage on cross-department/municipality projects; set goals and deadlines; communicate progress
Supervise staff: assign work, direct duties, monitor progress, provide feedback/training
Conduct training on work processes and standards
Participate in GIS vendor software/equipment selection
Provide service to internal and external customers
Work Environment
Primarily sedentary office work indoors; occasional light lifting up to 25 lbs. Standard office equipment.
