is hiring a
GIS Analyst
for a full-time contract position with the local municipal government in Durham, NC.
As a GIS Analyst you would provide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services and support by researching, gathering, investigating, field-verifying, and distributing data, including custom maps.
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) contract position with a pay rate of $27-$28/hour. The contract has no specific end-date and is effectively open-ended, as well as offering the possibility of conversion.
Responsibilities Include:
Conduct in-depth research and analysis to assess GIS development initiatives, system design, and implementation strategies, identifying data gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement.
Lead investigative review of GIS data by acquiring, validating, and interpreting source documents (e.g., engineering plans, as-builts, plats, surveys, and utility records) to ensure accurate geographic and attribute data input.
Perform comprehensive user needs assessments by gathering and analyzing requirements, evaluating system performance, and recommending evidence-based enhancements to GIS databases and applications.
Conduct detailed field investigations to verify infrastructure locations and attributes prior to database updates, reconciling field findings with existing records and documenting variances through formal reporting.
Analyze and process complex data requests by researching relevant datasets, evaluating data accuracy and completeness, and producing analytical reports and custom maps that support operational and planning decisions.
Prepare technical reports, summaries, and investigative documentation outlining research findings, methodology, data sources, and recommended actions.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Engineering, Surveying, Computer Science, or a related field with demonstrated coursework or applied experience in spatial analysis, research methods, or data investigation.
Experience using ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro, including spatial analysis tools, data validation techniques, and database management functions.
Experience researching, interpreting, and reconciling data and documentation.
Ability to conduct structured investigations, perform root-cause analysis, and apply critical thinking to resolve complex data discrepancies.
Technical writing skills with the ability to produce clear, well-organized reports, investigative summaries, business correspondence, and formal documentation using proper grammar and professional standards.
Ability to synthesize large volumes of technical information into actionable recommendations supported by research and analysis.
Valid NC Class C Driver’s License required for permanent employment (not contract employment).
