About the Role
Key Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced GIS developer to take technical ownership of user stories within an agile Scrum team, perform evolutionary maintenance, and ensure operational support for software with a geospatial component.
You will contribute to an IT architecture where geospatial APIs play a central role—designing new services, optimizing existing applications, and enhancing functionality, scalability, performance, and maintainability of the overall system landscape. This includes working closely with input data, databases, and architectural components.
Conduct technical analyses based on input from functional and business analysts
Design, develop, test, and debug data-driven web applications and APIs
Build, enhance, and manage software components, databases, and infrastructure
Implement and integrate geospatial APIs into applications for government agencies, utilities, and GIS professionals
Optimize existing and new services with a focus on usability, performance, and reliability
Support the team in automating configurations and deployment processes
Create and maintain technical documentation
Collaborate with the team to provide operational support
Offer technical support to users and other stakeholders
Report progress to the team, product owner, and team lead
Proactively identify improvement opportunities and contribute to optimization and innovation initiatives
Take a leading role in agile practices and mentor developers where needed
Your Profile
You hold a master’s degree in a technical or engineering discipline—or have equivalent professional experience. Additionally, you have at least 9 years of demonstrable experience in a similar development role, with a clear focus on building data-driven web applications and APIs.
Strong proficiency in software development, with the ability to efficiently code, test, and debug
Ability to independently conduct robust technical analyses based on functional and business requirements
Solid knowledge of database technologies, especially MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL, including SQL optimization techniques (e.g., query plans, indexing)
Extensive experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and core geospatial concepts such as coordinate reference systems, ECQL, GML, GeoJSON, and WKT
Familiarity with GIS solutions including ESRI ArcGIS products, GeoServer, and OSGeo tools
Proficiency in technologies such as .NET Framework, OpenAPI, PowerShell, XML, and YAML
Interest in standardization and knowledge of geospatial standards, particularly OGC specifications
Experience with agile development methodologies and ability to assume a leadership role within them
Experience guiding or mentoring development teams
Knowledge of Microsoft Azure and cloud computing is a plus
Structured work approach with a solution-oriented mindset and continuous drive for sustainable improvements
Team player who clearly justifies technical decisions and critically evaluates provided use cases
Strong communication skills, able to interact effectively with other teams, clients, and end users as needed
Language requirement: Fluent Dutch (CEFR level C2)
The position is primarily based in Ghent, with occasional travel to Brussels.
