About the Role
The GIS student internship position is designed to provide college students with valuable, hands-on experience in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The internship aims to provide students with hands-on GIS experience by performing GIS tasks related to planning, preparation, and projects for both the internal GIS team and departments countywide. Salary will be determined depending on qualifications of candidates who exceed minimum requirements as outlined within the job description. Additional compensations based on licensure.
Essential Functions:
Edits and creates datasets, maps, and map-based applications using ArcGIS software.
Uses cartographic design principles to produce effective visualizations for print and digital use.
Performs spatial analysis to support operations.
Demonstrates excellent customer service skills when responding to user questions and requests for service.
Assists end-users and participates in project teams where technical support is needed for GIS processes and data conversion.
Performs technical work to support and maintain GIS layers, maps, and toolsets associated with public safety and disaster response systems.
Assists in maintaining GIS databases, web services, and related software integrations.
Maintains documentation and metadata to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
Follows established standards and best practices for GIS workflows and data management.
Additional Duties: Performs other related work as required. In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties and work varying schedules.
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must currently be enrolled at a local college or university and working toward a bachelor's degree, master's degree, certificate, or equivalent credential in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, GIS or a related field. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Additional Requirements:
Demonstrated proficiency with Esri ArcGIS software, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and/or ArcGIS Enterprise.
Experience with Python, ModelBuilder, and/or SQL is a plus.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear documentation and correspondence.
Ability to analyze data, troubleshoot issues, and learn new technologies.
Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and willingness to learn.
Must be able to learn new concepts quickly and resolve complex technical problems effectively.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to organize and prioritize tasks successfully.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s license.
