GIS SPECIALIST
Reports to:
Manager of Engineering
Location:
Phoenix, AZ
Position Summary
The GIS Specialist at Wecom Fiber plays a critical role in supporting geographic information system (GIS) activities, fiber network records management, spatial data analysis, and mapping functions across the full lifecycle of FTTH network infrastructure — from planning and design through construction and ongoing operations. This role is the primary steward of accurate, complete, and current network asset data in Wecom Fiber’s GIS and fiber inventory systems.
Key Responsibilities
Collect, analyze, and manage spatial data using GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, IQGeo, Vetro FiberMap, or similar) to support FTTH network planning, asset management, and project mapping.
Create and maintain accurate fiber network maps, strand counts, splice diagrams, and spatial databases to support engineering design, construction execution, and executive decision-making.
Build, maintain, and continuously improve fiber network records in the company’s GIS system of record (e.g., IQGeo, Vetro, 3-GIS), ensuring data structure, plan hygiene, and nomenclature standards are consistently applied across all markets.
Perform QA/QC on GIS and OSP engineering data — including fiber cable, conduit, splice points, equipment locations, and passings — to ensure accuracy, completeness, and conformance to company data standards and NEC requirements.
Collaborate closely with OSP engineers, construction project managers, field technicians, and network operations teams to integrate GIS data throughout the network build lifecycle, from high-level design (HLD) through final as-built records.
Review and incorporate construction as-builts and civil engineering prints into GIS inventory systems, accurately recording fiber routes, conduit paths, splice closures, equipment locations, and all OSP assets to reflect field-installed conditions.
Prepare and maintain GIS maps, facility redlines, and positive response data to support 811 utility locate requests and ensure Wecom Fiber’s underground infrastructure is properly represented in one-call notification systems.
Upload and maintain current facility data in the 811-notification system, keeping Wecom Fiber’s infrastructure coverage accurate and compliant with state one-call requirements.
Support serviceability analysis by maintaining accurate address-level passings data, enabling the commercial team to verify serviceable locations and market footprint.
Interpret and process aerial and underground fiber design plans, OSP design maps, and CAD drawings in coordination with engineering and permitting teams.
Assist in developing GIS automation workflows and process improvements to scale data quality as the fiber network expands into new markets.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Geomatics, Telecommunications, or a related field is strongly preferred.
1–3 years of experience in GIS analysis, spatial data management, or fiber/telecom network records, with preference for candidates who have worked in a telecommunications or utility environment.
Proficiency in GIS platforms such as ArcGIS (Desktop/Pro/Online), QGIS, and/or fiber-specific inventory tools such as IQGeo (Network Manager), Vetro FiberMap, 3-GIS, or OSPInsight.
Working knowledge of fiber optic network architecture, including FTTH/FTTP topology, PON design concepts, aerial and underground OSP construction methods, and fiber splicing terminology.
Ability to read and interpret civil engineering prints, as-built drawings, OSP design maps, and CAD drawings, and translate field conditions into accurate GIS records.
Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail; ability to manage and QA/QC complex spatial datasets across multiple concurrent markets or projects.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable collaborating with cross-functional teams including OSP engineers, construction crews, permitting staff, and network operations.
Familiarity with 811 one-call utility notification systems and submitting/maintaining facility data for positive response compliance.
Experience with AutoCAD, Katapult, or similar CAD/field-capture tools is a plus.
Valid driver’s license and ability to perform occasional field visits to verify or collect asset data as needed.
