Description
This position is pending final approval.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine and complex tasks of a technical nature in the coordination of a County-wide geographic information system. Prepares, revises and updates maps; reviews property deeds and other records; assist other department in conveyance of title; and performs other work as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician uses skilled conventional and computerized drafting techniques to prepare and maintain maps and other records for the County.
Examples of Duties
The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. Marginal duties (shown in italics) are those which are least likely to be essential functions for any single position in this class.
Using the GIS System, prepares, revises, or updates maps, overlays, and other visual records using conventional and computerized drafting techniques and existing maps, surveys, or legal descriptions of property or boundaries.
Maintains Assessor Plats and Mining Plats, and conducts quality control checks to insure integrity of the data and performs necessary corrections.
Plots and records boundaries, easements, and other information from descriptions in deeds, property descriptions and other sources of information.
Creates, maintains, acquires and distributes GIS data for use with street centerlines, water bodies and features, easements, zoning, aerial photography, soil surveys and digital elevation models.
Serves as the County liaison and technical resource on questions, issues and projects involving GIS applications.
Computes scales required to increase or decrease sizes of revised maps; computes land areas.
Assigns Assessor's parcel numbers and maintains appropriate records.
Assists public, title companies, brokers, appraisers and others with land descriptions; reviews planning and zoning maps for accuracy and completeness.
Advises superiors of mapping problems, apparent defects in chain of title, boundary descriptions, or other source material.
Reproduces maps and other documents.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of
principles, practices, and equipment used in methods of computer-aided drafting and GIS applications; drafting maps; legal descriptions of property; mathematics including algebra and geometry; basic office procedures.
Ability to
use mechanical and computerized drawing tools and to do drafting and lettering; plot boundaries, easements, and other visual records using conventional and computerized drafting techniques and existing maps, surveys, or legal descriptions of property our boundaries; read and use assessment records, deeds, and other public and private records used in property transactions; assist the public and others in the use of maps and other legal descriptions.
Experience And Training
Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
Associate of Arts Degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science or closely related field or a combination of experience and education equal to one year in geography, GIS systems, computer aided drafting or equivalent training.

Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) (1)
Humboldt County, Nevada contributes 36.75% of an eligible Regular Member's salary for retirement.
Nevada Deferred Compensation Program (NDC)
:
The NDC is voluntary retirement savings program for employees of the State of Nevada, NSHE and other local government employers.
The program is designed to supplement other retirement savings and pensions.
Contributions are made pre-tax and investment earnings are tax-deferred or you may invest on pre-tax (Roth) basis and your investment earnings will be tax free upon eligible withdrawal.
Both types of deductions are made through payroll.
Insurance Coverage
Insurance Stipend
Humboldt County, Nevada provides a monthly insurance stipend to assist employees who elect to participate in any of the County offered insurance plans.
The stipend for Fiscal Year 2026-2027 is $1,300.00 per month for Employee only, Employee and Spouse, and Employee and Child(ren) Health Plan Options and $2,000.00 per month for the Employee and Family Health Plan Option listed below.
Health Insurance Eligibility

Employees working 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health insurance coverage.
Eligible employees as defined in the group health insurance plan are eligible to enroll in the group health insurance plan effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
Dependents of employees, as defined in the current plan booklet, are also eligible for coverage under the insurance plan at the employee's expense.
Employees must authorize a payroll deduction for the share of the health coverage premium to be paid by the employee.

Leave Plans
Annual Leave
All full-time employees will earn annual leave beginning from their initial date of hire at a rate of .0385 hours earned per hour's paid (3).
Part-time employees who regularly work 20 hours or more per week will earn annual leave on a pro-rated basis.
Employees earn additional annual leave hours at 3, 6, 11, 16, 21 and 25 years of service up to a maximum of 200 hours per year.
While on probationary period, an employee cannot take annual leave for the first six months; the employee still accrues vacation leave during this time.
Sick Leave
:
Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees accrue sick leave at the rate of .05 hours for each hour worked up to a maximum accrual of 120 hours per year with a maximum accrual of 980 hours.
Holiday Leave
:
Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees enjoy 12 paid holidays per year plus one additional day as a floating holiday (4).

Tuition Reimbursement
Humboldt County, Nevada values its employees and empowers them to enhance their skills by taking career related higher education courses as well as participating in job related workshops and seminars.
To that end, the County has a generous Tuition Reimbursement policy for accredited courses, reimbursing up to $4,500 per year (5) in educational expenses.

Humboldt County, Nevada provides benefits to regular employees. Most part-time positions are ineligible for benefits.
1: PERS retirement benefits are only available to employees hired in positions that work 20 hours per week or more on a regular basis. Positions of less than 20 hours per week (or less than 1040 hours in a fiscal year) will instead participate in Social Security.
2: Coinsurance is the percentage of costs paid by employees after they have paid/met their respective deductibles.
3: Employees will accrue annual leave during their introductory period but are not allowed to use annual leave until you they have been employed continuously for at least 6 months.
4: Employees are eligible to receive the additional floating holiday after successful completion of one (1) year of service with the County.
