GIS Technician

JOB SUMMARY Under the general direction of a supervisor, creates and maintains data for the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS); prepares maps and graphics; collects information in the field; does related work as required. Supervision Received: Under the general direction of a supervisor. Supervision Exercised: None EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Performs related duties as required. Creates and updates GIS database layers. Collects information in the field using GPS hardware. Develops maps utilizing ArcGIS software. Performs QA/QC on GIS data to insure data quality. Uses GIS software to perform queries and analysis of locations, relationships, and trends of data. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Good knowledge of the fundamental concepts and applications of GIS. Good knowledge of ArcGIS. Ability to read and use survey maps, architectural plans, engineering drawings, and aerial photographs. Ability to read and interpret legal descriptions and tract descriptions. Ability to use various Microsoft Office software products. Ability to follow written and oral directions. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Computer Science, Planning or a related field and one (1) year of experience in the GIS field utilizing ArcGIS software OR an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
