About the Role
Summary
This position performs routine and entry-level technical work involving Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). It is designed for individuals currently pursuing higher education or recent graduates seeking to gain practical experience through an internship that complements formal coursework and enhances professional development.
Essential Duties
Creates and updates GIS data using ArcGIS Pro and various ArcGIS Mobile Apps in the field.
Create, modify, and update the GIS data in an Enterprise database.
Develop and update various static maps for exhibits and reports at different scales and layouts using ArcGIS Pro.
Read and interpret legal descriptions to accurately create and edit GIS data.
Assists in geo-referencing AutoCAD files.
Maintains computer and manual records of applications.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Assists the GIS Manager on projects as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education and Experience: Must be enrolled (or recently graduated) and in good standing in a higher education program; If enrolled, the applicant must be a third-year, fourth-year, or fifth-year undergraduate student, or a first-year or second-year graduate student in Geographic Information Science, Computer Information Systems, Data Analytics/Analysts/Scientists, or a degree with three or more GIS-focused courses. Must have completed relevant coursework in Geographic Information Science.
Knowledge: Beginner understanding of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and various ArcGIS Mobile Apps, including the principles and methods used in the planning, design, data collection, editing, and maintenance of GIS datasets. It also demands a proficient understanding of the use and operations of GPS Equipment.
Skills: The successful candidate should demonstrate strong critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to follow direction, facilitate collaboration, and work effectively both independently and within a team environment. Proficiency in operating standard office software and equipment, particularly Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, is required. The position also calls for strong written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and a customer service–oriented approach to internal and external interactions.
Abilities: This position requires the ability to interpret and analyze complex spatial and tabular data, exercise sound technical judgment to resolve workflow challenges, and ensure accuracy while balancing multiple priorities. The successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability in learning and applying new technologies, implementing effective GIS solutions, and using creative problem-solving to enhance data and process quality. Strong organizational awareness, initiative, and professionalism in managing confidential and time-sensitive tasks are essential. The employee must consistently meet deadlines and remain receptive to peer review and collaborative feedback.
Certificates and Licenses: A valid Texas Driver’s License is required. Employee must be insurable by Guadalupe County’s insurance provider to operate County vehicles.
Physical Demands: Duties involve a combination of walking, sitting, standing, bending, and stooping. The position may occasionally require lifting, carrying, or pushing/pulling items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work is primarily performed in an indoor office environment with moderate noise levels, but periodic fieldwork is also required.
