About the Role
Company
VITO is the science-to-technology partner for businesses, governments, and society seeking sound advice and solutions for their sustainability transition. With a multidisciplinary approach and unique test-and-scale infrastructure, we accelerate innovative pathways toward resilient ecosystems, a circular and regenerative economy, and a healthy living environment. Our researchers collaborate across expert teams to translate scientific insights into practical technologies. At VITO, we harness the power of science and technology to valorize and implement sustainable solutions globally—ensuring a livable future for at least another 1,000 years.
Unit: Environmental Intelligence
Approximately 350 motivated staff members within this unit work to monitor our ‘Planetary Boundaries’ and ‘Human Boundaries’. Together, we monitor, study, and analyze our environment (land, climate, air, water…) and our health. We combine data and advanced technologies to develop and share valuable information, insights, and models with governments, other research institutions, companies, and more.
Position: Junior Geologist
To strengthen our Geology team, we are looking for a new colleague. Do you have a strong interest in the subsurface and enjoy working at the interface between geological research and practical applications? Are you eager to contribute to expanding knowledge of Flemish geology? Then you might be the colleague we’re looking for.
As a junior geologist, you will contribute to the development of robust 3D geological models at various scales—from the regional geological reference model for Flanders to detailed local subsurface models for applications in infrastructure, hydrology, soil mechanics, geothermal energy, and spatial development. You will translate large volumes of geospatial data into geological insights using modern, data-driven workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Integrate geological, geotechnical, and geophysical data and apply your geological knowledge to build geological models. This involves first collecting, then interpreting, and finally modeling the available data.
Report on both the modeling process and the model outputs to clients, stakeholders, and the scientific community.
Collaborate closely with fellow geologists, IT specialists, and the interdisciplinary geothermal team at VITO.
Stay up to date on the latest techniques and software developments in the field of geological modeling.
Where applicable, document and share new insights through scientific publications.

Master’s or PhD degree in Geology.
Strong motivation to solve geological problems.
Genuine interest in 3D geological modeling.
Proficiency in GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS) as a visualization and analysis tool.
Affinity with data processing; experience with Python or similar scripting languages is highly desirable to enhance research reproducibility.
Good communication skills and a collaborative team-player mindset.
Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, and an open-minded attitude.
