The Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences (MGeo) conducts research and education on fundamental and applied issues concerning Earth’s past, present, and future climate and environment—including human–nature interactions and their implications for human welfare. MGeo develops and applies cutting-edge methods, models, and techniques across environmental science, Quaternary and bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, geospatial information science (GIS), and computational environmental and health sciences—studying processes from the microscopic to the planetary scale across all time scales.

Job Description
The appointee is expected to contribute to the department’s core activities in research, teaching, collaboration, and, where applicable, academic leadership.
Research
Conduct research within geospatial information science, with a focus on the technical aspects of GIS.
Actively seek and obtain external research funding.
Publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Contribute to developing the department’s research environment, including interdisciplinary collaborations.
Teaching
Teach at both undergraduate and master’s levels in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with particular emphasis on technically oriented courses such as:
- Geodatabases
- Web GIS
- GIS algorithms and data structures
- Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI)
- Collection and analysis of 3D geospatial data
Assume course responsibility, contribute to course development, and participate in pedagogical development within the field.
Collaboration
Collaborate with the surrounding society—including public authorities, industry, and other societal actors—to apply GIS and geospatial technologies in relevant areas such as environment and climate, urban planning, health and epidemiology, or disaster management.
Administrative Duties
Participate in departmental and faculty-level administrative and leadership tasks, such as committee work, program development, and coordination assignments.
The distribution between research, teaching, collaboration, and administrative duties follows the faculty’s working time model: teaching typically accounts for 25–35% of full-time work, with the remainder allocated to research, collaboration, and other tasks. The content, distribution, and scope of duties may evolve over time in response to operational development, strategic priorities, and external conditions.
To support the establishment of a research group, resources equivalent to one PhD student position will be attached to this appointment.
Eligibility
According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 4), eligibility for appointment as Lecturer requires:
Demonstrated pedagogical competence, and
A PhD degree or equivalent scientific competence.
For this position, a PhD in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geospatial Information Science, Geoinformatics, Technical Surveying/Geomatics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field is required.
Pedagogical higher education training of at least five weeks is required, or equivalent competencies acquired otherwise. Exceptions may be made in special circumstances; applicants lacking such training must complete it within two years of appointment.
Applicants must also be suitable for and capable of performing the duties of the position effectively.
Assessment Criteria
Mandatory Qualifications
A strong scientific background in the technical aspects of GIS, demonstrated by publications in well-regarded, peer-reviewed journals.
Proven ability to successfully compete for and secure external research funding, and experience leading independent research projects.
Documented experience teaching at the master’s level in GIS, especially in geodatabases, Web GIS, GIS algorithms and data structures, GeoAI, and 3D geospatial data.
Experience teaching at both undergraduate and master’s levels.
Experience supervising students and PhD candidates.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with society, including applying GIS and geospatial technologies in areas such as environment and climate, urban development, health, or disaster management—ideally in collaboration with public agencies, industry, or other societal actors.
Excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
Experience with research and/or teaching outside Lund University.
Strong collaborative skills and well-developed communication abilities.
Meritorious Qualifications
Experience and expertise in Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) and/or digital twins.
Leadership skills, including experience leading research projects or groups.
Documented experience with interdisciplinary collaboration.
Experience developing innovative teaching methods in GIS.
Active participation in international research and education networks.
Proficiency in Swedish, spoken and written.
Experience with distance-based teaching at undergraduate and/or master’s levels.
Personal Qualities
Creativity, strong motivation, and the ability to engage with new research fields.
Ability to share knowledge and contribute to a collegial, collaborative academic environment.
Capacity to cooperate effectively with research, teaching, and administrative staff—both internally and externally—including with academia, industry, and the public sector.
Additional Information
Pedagogical competence will be assessed with equal weight as scientific competence.
In addition to the Higher Education Ordinance, the Lund University Employment Regulations apply to appointments of academic staff.
For non-Swedish-speaking appointees, Swedish at level B2* must be achieved within three years.
