About the Role
Part-time GIS Officer
Location: Hobart Tasmania
Length: 6 months with possible extension to fill maternity leave
Maps only matter when they change a decision. In this role you turn messy spatial data into location intelligence that clients can act on—through analysis, clear visualisation, and services that stay reliable after handover. You will sit close to delivery: shaping how projects are scoped, built, and explained, and making sure every map earns its place.
Performance Objectives
Deliver client mapping and analysis products on agreed scope, quality, and dates, with findings a non-specialist can use.
Build and maintain spatial datasets so geometry, attributes, and metadata are accurate, documented, and ready for reuse.
Produce maps, dashboards, and visual products that answer the brief in the first review, not the third.
Support software and managed-service work by preparing data, testing outputs, and closing defects before they reach the client.
Run or assist training so participants leave able to repeat the workflow without you in the room.
Flag data, scope, or timeline risks early and propose a practical fix the project lead can accept.
Environment & Resources
You will work in a small specialist team where GIS, development, and client delivery sit side by side. Expect desktop and web GIS, spatial databases, and versioned project files rather than a large corporate stack. You will report to the practice lead, share tools and templates with the delivery team, and have direct access to the people who designed the method—not a distant support queue.
Essential Qualifications
Proven delivery of GIS analysis and cartographic products for external clients or operational users.
Confident use of industry GIS software and spatial data formats, including joins, projections, and quality checks.
Experience supporting web maps, dashboards, or scripted data preparation is strongly preferred.
Comfort switching between analysis, visualisation, and light training within the same week.
Role Selling Points
Real ownership: your maps and data products go to clients, not into a review pile.
Breadth across mapping, location intelligence, visualisation, training, and managed services.
A small team where your judgement on data quality is visible and valued.
If you want your GIS work judged by what clients can do with it, apply with two examples of spatial products you delivered and the decision each one supported.
