Job Purpose The Senior GIS Analyst is responsible for the design, development, analysis, management, and maintenance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data to support business and operational decision-making. The role provides advanced GIS expertise, develops spatial solutions, performs complex geospatial analysis, and translates spatial data into meaningful insights, maps, dashboards, and reports.
The Senior GIS Analyst will work closely with business stakeholders, technical teams, data specialists, and other relevant stakeholders to understand spatial information requirements and deliver accurate, reliable, and fit-for-purpose GIS solutions.
Key Responsibilities
GIS Analysis and Spatial Modelling
Perform advanced spatial and geospatial analysis to support business and operational requirements.
Develop spatial models, workflows, and analytical methodologies.
Analyse complex spatial datasets to identify trends, patterns, relationships, and opportunities.
Conduct spatial queries, geoprocessing, network analysis, proximity analysis, and other advanced GIS analyses.
Integrate GIS data from multiple sources and formats.
Produce high-quality thematic maps, spatial reports, visualisations, and analytical outputs.
GIS Data Management
Manage, maintain, validate, and update spatial databases and GIS datasets.
Ensure the accuracy, completeness, integrity, and consistency of spatial data.
Develop and maintain data standards, metadata, data dictionaries, and GIS documentation.
Perform data cleansing, transformation, geocoding, digitisation, and quality assurance.
Support the integration of spatial and non-spatial datasets.
Identify and resolve data quality and integrity issues.
GIS Systems and Solutions
Design and implement GIS solutions aligned with organisational requirements.
Configure and maintain GIS applications, platforms, services, and tools.
Develop automated GIS workflows to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes.
Support the development of web-based GIS applications, dashboards, and interactive mapping solutions.
Integrate GIS systems with databases, enterprise systems, APIs, and other information systems where required.
Contribute to the development and implementation of GIS standards, frameworks, and best practices.
Technical Leadership
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to GIS Analysts, Junior GIS Analysts, and other GIS users.
Review GIS work and provide quality assurance on spatial analysis, datasets, maps, and deliverables.
Lead GIS-related projects and provide technical input into project planning and implementation.
Stay abreast of emerging GIS technologies, spatial analytics, remote sensing, and geospatial industry trends.
Recommend appropriate GIS technologies and solutions based on business requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement
Engage with stakeholders to understand GIS and spatial information requirements.
Translate business requirements into practical GIS solutions and technical specifications.
Present spatial analysis, findings, maps, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Collaborate with IT, data, business, and operational teams on GIS-related initiatives.
Provide technical support and advice on the effective use of GIS technologies and spatial data.
Reporting and Documentation
Prepare technical reports, spatial analysis reports, maps, dashboards, and presentations.
Document GIS processes, methodologies, workflows, configurations, and technical specifications.
Maintain appropriate records of GIS datasets, projects, and analytical outputs.
Provide management with insights and recommendations based on spatial analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geomatics, Geography, Geoinformatics, Cartography, Surveying, Spatial Planning, or a related field.
A relevant postgraduate qualification will be advantageous.
Relevant GIS certifications will be advantageous.
Minimum Experience
5 to 8 years' experience in GIS, spatial analysis, geospatial data management, or a related environment.
Proven experience working with enterprise GIS environments and spatial databases.
Experience in developing and implementing GIS solutions and spatial workflows.
Experience with advanced spatial analysis, mapping, and data visualisation.
Experience providing technical guidance or mentoring to junior GIS professionals.
Experience working on complex GIS projects and engaging with multiple stakeholders.
