Multitemporal Sentinel-2 and Machine Learning for Rooibos Mapping
Honours research project investigating the use of multitemporal Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and machine learning for mapping and monitoring rooibos agriculture in the Western Cape, South Africa. The research evaluates seasonal imagery, spectral bands and vegetation indices to determine when rooibos is most separable from natural vegetation, other crops and exposed sandy soils.
Hyperspectral Crop Cultivar Classification
Used hyperspectral leaf reflectance data to investigate discrimination between six agricultural cultivars. Developed machine-learning classification workflows and evaluated model performance and temporal transferability between acquisition periods. A Linear SVM model achieved approximately 89% overall classification accuracy for the primary dataset.
Tokara Agricultural Water-Stress Decision Support
Collaborated on the development of a geospatial decision-support concept for agricultural irrigation and crop-water monitoring at Tokara Estate. The project integrated Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, rainfall, soil and spatial data to assess crop and soil-water conditions and support irrigation decision-making. Identified limitations associated with thermal imagery availability, spatial resolution, irrigation records and phenological information, and proposed improvements using sensors, farm weather data and higher-resolution field information.
