About the Role
The role
Geography at BITE is not a chalk-and-talk department. You will teach across BA and MA Geography and carry the applied side of the discipline — cartography, surveying, statistical methods, and the geospatial units that support our PG Diploma in Remote Sensing & GIS.
GIS or Remote Sensing exposure is genuinely valued here.
BITE runs the PG Diploma in RS & GIS alongside MA Geography, and Ganga-basin fieldwork is built into the postgraduate curriculum rather than bolted on. If you want a post where applied geospatial work and field studies are a real part of the teaching year, this is one.
Full-time, on-site at Babatpur, Varanasi.
Responsibilities
Teaching
Teach physical and human geography at undergraduate level — geomorphology, climatology, oceanography, biogeography, population, settlement, and economic geography
Teach systematic and regional papers at MA level, including advanced theory and the geography of India
Deliver practical instruction: cartography, map work and interpretation, surveying, and quantitative and statistical methods in geography
Contribute to GIS and Remote Sensing units on the PG Diploma, with hands-on software sessions where your background allows
Fieldwork and research supervision
Plan and lead field studies, including the Ganga-basin fieldwork built into the MA programme — route planning, site selection, data collection protocols, and student safety
Guide MA dissertations from question formulation through to submission
Supervise student research projects and encourage presentation at seminars and student conferences
Contribute to departmental research output and, where possible, publication
Curriculum and assessment
Design and update course content in line with MGKVP syllabi and the NEP 2020 framework
Set and evaluate internal assessments aligned to MGKVP examination patterns
Maintain and develop the department's practical resources — map collection, survey instruments, and geospatial datasets
Department and students
Mentor students on higher-study pathways (M.Sc., PhD, RS & GIS specialisation) and on competitive examinations where Geography is an optional subject — UPSC and UPPSC in particular
Contribute to departmental and institutional academic and co-curricular activities
Qualification
Essential
MA or M.Sc. in Geography
from a UGC-recognised university
Ability to teach geography at both undergraduate and postgraduate level
Competence in practical geography: cartography, map interpretation, surveying, and statistical methods
Ability to plan and lead field studies with student groups
Fluency in
Hindi and English
— our students come largely from Purvanchal and Bihar, and much of the teaching is bilingual
Preferred
UGC NET or PhD
in Geography
GIS or Remote Sensing exposure
— working familiarity with QGIS, ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, ENVI, or Google Earth Engine. This is genuinely valued given the PG Diploma, and candidates who can run a geospatial lab session will have a clear advantage.
Prior teaching experience at degree level
Publications in geography or geospatial research
Certification or formal training in GIS, Remote Sensing, or geoinformatics
Experience with GPS/DGPS survey equipment, total station, or drone-based mapping
Familiarity with the UPSC/UPPSC Geography optional syllabus
Experience supervising dissertations or field-based student research
What we offer

As per institutional norms, commensurate with qualification and experience. Discussed at interview.
A department with an applied geospatial programme rather than a purely classical syllabus
Fieldwork as a real part of the teaching year, not an annual formality
A 5-acre campus with digital classrooms, laboratories, and a library of over 15,000 books
