The Government of the Northwest Territories is seeking a Fire Management Geomatics Analyst to join the Department of Environment and Climate Change’s Forest Management Division in Fort Smith on a 15-month term.
This role applies advanced geomatics and spatial analysis to one of the NWT’s most operationally important programs. You will develop the data, mapping, analytical tools and geospatial products used to support wildfire response, risk mitigation, forest management and land and resource planning across the territory.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager of Fire Operations, you will serve as the senior technical specialist in geomatics for the Forest Management Division. You will manage spatial data, conduct advanced GIS analysis, support fire management planning and provide technical guidance to regional staff. The role also works closely with Informatics, the NWT Centre for Geomatics and other partners to evaluate emerging technologies and develop solutions to complex geospatial challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Manage the acquisition, integration, quality and security of vector, raster and other spatial data used by the fire management program.
Lead technical GIS projects involving advanced spatial analysis, modelling, mapping and integration of data from multiple sources.
Support wildfire planning through analysis of fire history, values at risk, weather, fire danger information and other spatial datasets.
Provide expert geomatics advice and troubleshooting support to regional fire management and GIS staff.
Evaluate emerging GIS technologies, applications and data sources and develop solutions to evolving operational requirements.
Develop GIS project plans, analytical tools, automated processes and spatial products to support research, planning and operational decision-making. 28412\-\_job\_description 28412\-\_job\_description
Qualifications
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
A bachelor’s degree in Geography or a natural resource management-related field, combined with one of the following:
A certificate or diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from a recognized technical institute; or
Demonstrated completion of a core GIS curriculum within the degree program that is equivalent to a GIS certificate or diploma.
Candidates must also have three years of related and current experience gained within the last four years at the analyst level.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
The incumbent must be willing and able to obtain a valid passport and meet the NWT Class 5 Driver’s Licence requirement.
