About the Role
Geospatial Applied Scientist | Tokyo-based satellite data company (hybrid)
A Tokyo-based space company that builds and operates its own constellation of radar (SAR) satellites is hiring a Geospatial Applied Scientist for its Solution Development team.
About the company
Founded in 2018, with a record-setting start: it reportedly reached USD 100 million in funding within 17 months, the fastest fundraising by a space startup globally
Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth market since December 2024, with roughly USD 200 million raised to date
Nine of its own satellites have been launched, on the way to a planned constellation of 30 that can observe almost any location on Earth, day or night, in any weather
Expanding fast: a new launch agreement for 20 more satellites (2028-2031) was announced this month, and a US subsidiary opened in 2025
Its satellite data and analytics are used for disaster response, infrastructure monitoring, urban development and environmental monitoring
The role
Develop and improve analytics models using imagery from the company's own satellites
Research algorithms and choose the right approach for each problem (image processing, statistical learning, deep learning)
Combine SAR imagery with other data such as optical satellite images, infrastructure data and weather
Work closely with scientists and business teams to understand customer and partner needs, and help communicate results to stakeholders
Why this role
Work daily with data from a satellite constellation that is still being built, at a company in rapid growth mode
Apply data science to real problems in sustainability, disaster prevention and management
Join a global team of skilled engineers and scientists, with some freedom in how problems are approached and solved
Support for learning new skills and certifications
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or a related field
Production-ready Python, including NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn and SciPy
Familiarity with raster and vector data formats, and hands-on experience with GDAL and Python geospatial libraries (rasterio, GeoPandas, shapely)
Experience building analytics with geospatial data
Preferred
Master's degree in a related field
Experience with SAR data and earth observation applications
Strong grounding in classical ML and deep learning, with PyTorch or similar
Experience applying computer vision or ML to geospatial data
Fluent Japanese to explain results to both experts and non-experts
