GIS Data Specialist/Spatial Data Analyst

The **GIS Data Specialist / Spatial Data Analyst** is responsible for preparing, validating, analysing, and maintaining geospatial datasets used within a geospatial SaaS platform supporting the South African agriculture sector. The role manages spatial data including farms, fields, orchards, crop areas, infrastructure, satellite and drone imagery, elevation models, and reporting datasets, ensuring data quality, accuracy, and consistency. The position also supports spatial analysis, remote sensing workflows, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of GIS data processes. ## Key Responsibilities ### Spatial Data Management * Prepare, maintain, and update geospatial datasets for applications, reporting, mapping, and analysis. * Ensure data is accurately structured, documented, and traceable. ### Data Quality & Validation * Perform quality assurance checks on spatial data, including geometry validation, topology, projections, attributes, and area calculations. * Identify, document, and resolve data quality issues. ### Spatial Analysis * Conduct spatial analysis such as overlays, buffers, spatial joins, intersections, proximity analysis, and reporting-related investigations. ### Remote Sensing & Raster Data * Process and analyse satellite, drone, and elevation datasets. * Support raster validation, clipping, mosaicking, reprojection, and raster-to-vector analysis. ### Spatial Database Support * Assist with loading, validating, and querying spatial data within PostGIS or similar spatial databases. * Support spatial reporting and data extraction requirements. ### Reporting & Stakeholder Support * Prepare spatial datasets for reports and dashboards. * Document data sources, processing methodologies, and limitations. * Support internal teams and contribute to the improvement and standardisation of GIS processes. ## Minimum Qualifications & Experience ### Required * Qualification in GIS, Geomatics, Geography, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. * Experience with GIS data preparation, validation, analysis, and map production. * Proficiency in QGIS, ArcGIS, or similar GIS platforms. * Experience working with vector, raster, and remote sensing datasets. * Strong understanding of coordinate systems, projections, and spatial data quality principles. * Strong communication and problem-solving skills. ### Advantageous * Experience with PostGIS, PostgreSQL, Spatial SQL, or database-driven GIS environments. * Agricultural, land management, farming, or infrastructure-related GIS experience. * Knowledge of Python, R, SQL, GeoPandas, GDAL/OGR, or GIS automation tools. * Experience with satellite imagery, drone data, vegetation indices, zonal statistics, and spatial reporting. ## Key Competencies ### Technical #### * GIS analysis and mapping * Spatial data validation and quality assurance * Remote sensing and raster processing #### * Spatial databases and SQL * Metadata management and workflow documentation ### Behavioural #### * Strong attention to detail * Analytical and problem-solving mindset #### * Effective communication skills * Ability to work independently and manage priorities * Commitment to continuous learning and process improvement Apply now!
