About the Role
GIS Manager (IT) | Corporate Platform | Digital Transformation
Location: Barcelona Metropolitan Area
Tech Stack: ESRI, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, FME, Python, Spatial Databases
GIS is not just a tool here—it’s a critical corporate platform enabling better operations across assets, networks, data, mobility, system integration, data quality, business users, and decision-making. This opportunity is precisely about that.
At Akuaro, we’re supporting a solid, industry-leading utilities company in Barcelona正处于 a pivotal phase of evolving its corporate GIS ecosystem. We’re looking for a GIS Manager (IT) to lead this function from within the IT department: defining strategy, roadmap, team, vendors, service delivery, data quality, platform evolution, and business integration. This is not a role for a GIS technical consultant, but for someone who views GIS as a living, integrated corporate platform—deeply connected to the company’s operational reality.
The Moment
The company is modernizing its GIS environment toward a more robust, scalable, and integrated architecture, with a strong focus on ESRI / ArcGIS technologies—and GIS is increasingly central to its Information Systems function.
The challenge involves streamlining processes, improving data quality, coordinating vendors, supporting internal and external users, integrating with corporate systems (e.g., SAP), and ensuring the GIS delivers tangible value to operations, assets, networks, and business outcomes.
What You’ll Do
Lead the corporate GIS function within the IT department.
Define and execute the GIS technology roadmap.
Coordinate the evolution of the ESRI platform: ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and associated solutions.
Drive migration from legacy GIS environments to modern architectures.
Manage GIS projects end-to-end: requirements, design, planning, execution, deployment, and monitoring.
Coordinate internal teams, external resources, and specialized vendors.
Ensure GIS service availability, data quality, performance, and continuity.
Champion geospatial data quality and governance.
Manage incidents, enhancements, priorities, budget, and planning.
Serve as the key liaison between IT, operations, business units, users, and vendors.
Support integration of GIS with corporate systems: ERP, BI, mobile, asset management, remote metering, SCADA, and other operational environments.
What We’re Looking For
A strong GIS professional with an IT mindset—someone who can speak the language of technical teams, vendors, business users, and internal leaders; who can dive into details when needed, but also think strategically about platform, service, and long-term roadmap.
Key Requirements
Completed university degree.
Solid experience in GIS projects, platforms, or services.
Proven experience with ESRI technologies: ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server/Portal, or similar.
Knowledge of corporate GIS architectures.
Experience managing technology projects.
Ability to coordinate internal teams, external resources, and vendors.
Experience working with geospatial data, spatial databases, and system integration.
IT mindset: service delivery, production support, incident management, quality, documentation, user support, security, and methodologies.
Native Spanish; Catalan and English are valued.
Highly Valued
Experience in utilities, infrastructure, energy, water, gas, telecom, smart cities, or asset management.
Experience with Smallworld, legacy GIS migrations, or transition to ESRI platforms.
Knowledge of: ArcGIS UtilityNetwork, FME, Python for GIS.
Spatial databases: PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, SQL Server, etc.
Geospatial services: WMS, WFS, REST.
Experience integrating GIS with SAP, SCADA, BI, GMAO, mobile, or other corporate systems.
GIS-BIM, 3D, digital twin, or asset modeling experience.
Why You Might Be Interested
Here, GIS is not an isolated department or secondary tool—it’s a critical platform for a stable, investment-capable end-user company undergoing real digital transformation. You’ll have visibility, influence, and real impact.
This role is especially attractive if you’re coming from GIS/ESRI consulting and want to move in-house—gaining greater ownership and direct budget control to build a corporate platform. Or if you’re already in a utility, engineering, or infrastructure environment and want to lead a technology evolution with direct operational and business impact.
This is not just about delivering projects—it’s about building strategy, roadmap, service culture, and the future of GIS from within.
