Tasks & Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced GIS developer to take technical ownership of user stories within an agile Scrum team, perform evolutionary maintenance, and manage operational support for software with a geospatial component.
You will contribute to an IT landscape where geospatial APIs play a central role—building new services, enhancing existing applications, and improving functionality, scalability, performance, and maintainability of the overall system, while considering input data, databases, and relevant architectural components.
Conduct technical analyses based on input from functional and business analysts.
Design, develop, test, and debug data-driven web applications and APIs.
Co-design, co-build, and help improve and manage software components, databases, and infrastructure.
Implement and integrate geospatial APIs into applications for government agencies, utilities, and GIS professionals.
Optimize existing and new services with attention to usability, performance, and reliability.
Support the team in automating configurations and deployment processes.
Create and maintain technical documentation.
Provide operational support alongside the team.
Offer technical support to users and other stakeholders.
Report progress to the team, product owner, and team lead.
Proactively identify improvement opportunities and contribute to optimization and innovation initiatives.
Take a proactive role within agile methodologies and mentor developers where needed.
Your Profile
You hold a master’s degree in a technical or engineering discipline—or have equivalent experience—and bring at least 9 years of experience in a similar development role, with a clear focus on building data-driven web applications and APIs.
You have extensive experience in software development and can efficiently carry out coding, testing, and debugging tasks.
You independently produce robust technical analyses based on input from functional and business analysts.
You have solid knowledge of database technologies, especially MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL, and SQL optimization techniques (e.g., query plans, indexing).
You have in-depth experience with geographic information systems and core geospatial concepts such as coordinate reference systems, ECQL, GML, GeoJSON, and WKT.
You are familiar with GIS solutions including ESRI ArcGIS products, GeoServer, and OSGeo tools.
You are proficient with technologies such as .NET Framework, OpenAPI, PowerShell, XML, and YAML.
You have an interest in standardization and knowledge of geospatial standards, including OGC specifications.
You have experience with agile development methodologies and can assume a leading role within them.
You have experience guiding a development team and mentoring developers.
Knowledge of Microsoft Azure and cloud computing is a plus.
You work in a structured manner, adopt a solution-oriented mindset, and seek sustainable improvements.
You are a team player who clearly justifies technical decisions and critically evaluates provided use cases.
You communicate effectively with other teams, clients, and end users as needed.
Language requirement: Fluent Dutch at CEFR level C2.
The position is primarily based in Ghent, with occasional travel to Brussels.
Offer
You will become part of a growing SME with room for initiative and personal development. We ensure you join a challenging yet pleasant work environment with great colleagues. Together, we will define a career path for you, with dedicated attention and budget for additional training or certifications. You can expect a competitive salary, supplemented with fringe benefits—including a company car (or an alternative allowance).
(Freelance engagement is also possible.)
