About the Role
Introduction
The GIS Specialist will be responsible for the cleansing, validation, manipulation, integration, and preparation of spatial data for migration into the new Mining Licence System. The role will ensure that 100% of applicable applications, rights and clients are correctly spatially linked to their Areas of Interest (AOIs) and that all spatial datasets meet the required technical, spatial and data-quality standards for migration. The GIS Specialist will work closely with Regional Specialists, Data Analysts, Data Capturers, Database Administrators and the Project Team to resolve spatial data issues and ensure that spatial and non-spatial data remain correctly linked throughout the migration process.
Duties & Responsibilities
Spatial Data Cleansing and Validation:
Identify and correct records with missing, incorrect, or incomplete coordinates.
Validate coordinates and spatial information against approved source data.
Identify and correct invalid, duplicate, incomplete, or inconsistent spatial records.
Perform spatial data cleansing and standardisation across datasets received from different regions.
Validate that spatial records are located in the correct geographic areas.
Identify records requiring further investigation or confirmation from Regional Specialists.
Spatial and Non-Spatial Data Integration:
Perform spatial joins and attribute joins between spatial and non-spatial datasets.
Ensure that applications, rights and client records are correctly linked to their corresponding Areas of Interest.
Maintain spatial and non-spatial referential integrity throughout the migration process.
Investigate and correct records that fail spatial or attribute joins.
Ensure that unique identifiers are consistently maintained between spatial and non-spatial datasets.
Area of Interest (AOI) Validation:
Ensure that 100% of applicable records have a valid and correctly linked AOI before migration.
Validate AOI boundaries against available source information.
Identify and resolve duplicate, overlapping, missing, or incorrectly positioned AOIs.
Identify gaps, slivers, and other topology issues affecting AOIs.
Digitise or reconstruct missing spatial features where sufficient source information is available.
Validate the spatial relationship between AOIs, applications, rights and other relevant records.
Geometry and Topology Management:
Identify and correct invalid or corrupt geometries.
Conduct topology checks for overlapping polygons, Gaps and Incorrect polygon relationships.
Work closely with Regional Specialists to investigate and resolve spatial data discrepancies.
Obtain regional/business confirmation where historical records, coordinates, or AOI information cannot be resolved from the available source data.
Provide Regional Specialists with exception lists for validation and confirmation.
Track outstanding regional spatial issues through to resolution.
Incorporate validated regional information into the final migration datasets.
Spatial Data Conversion, Quality Check and Migration Preparation:
Convert spatial data into the formats required by the new Mining Licence System.
Prepare and validate shapefiles and other required spatial datasets for migration.
Ensure spatial datasets are correctly packaged and documented for the migration team.
Confirm that spatial datasets meet the agreed migration-readiness criteria.
Ensure all applicable records have valid spatial information and are correctly linked to their AOIs and that spatial and non-spatial identifiers are aligned.
Ensure all required spatial QA/QC checks have been completed.
Provide the migration team with validated, and migration-ready spatial datasets
Conduct formal GIS quality assurance and quality control before data is released for migration, including Geometry validation, Topology validation, coordinate validation, Attribute validation, Spatial join validation, AOI validation, Duplicate detection, and Spatial/non-spatial relationship validation.
