About the Role
Position Overview
GIS Specialist is responsible for leading enterprise‑level geospatial initiatives, integrating GIS with infrastructure planning, and ensuring compliance with municipal, national, and international standards. This role requires advanced technical expertise, project management skills, and the ability to translate spatial intelligence into actionable insights for sustainable development and infrastructure modernization.
Key Responsibilities
Developing enterprise GIS strategies for integration of municipal infrastructure and spatial planning systems.
Designing geodatabases and spatial data models to support land use, housing, and infrastructure projects.
Auditing spatial datasets for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with municipal and national standards.
Logging and digitizing infrastructure assets (roads, pipelines, treatment plants, housing layouts) into GIS registers.
Managing spatial development frameworks by updating maps, zoning layers, and infrastructure overlays.
Coordinating GIS integration with engineering, planning, and asset management teams for cross‑sector projects.
Implementing enterprise GIS platforms to centralize spatial data and improve municipal decision‑making.
Conducting spatial analysis for economic growth nodes, informal settlement upgrades, and precinct planning.
Preparing audit reports and spatial dashboards for stakeholders, regulators, and municipal councils.
Ensuring compliance with spatial planning legislation, infrastructure standards, and geospatial data policies.
Training municipal staff on enterprise GIS usage, data logging, and infrastructure mapping workflows.
Collaborating with consultants and engineers to align GIS outputs with infrastructure design and monitoring.
Optimizing GIS workflows for asset verification, conditional assessments, and valuation of municipal assets.
Documenting spatial processes for tender submissions, project portfolios, and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
Professional Registration: Pr GISc (South African Geomatics Council).
Academic Credentials: BSc / BTech in Geomatics, GIS, or related field.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in enterprise GIS and infrastructure projects.
Strong background in municipal infrastructure, housing development, and township planning.
Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, ERDAS, AutoCAD Civil 3D) and enterprise platforms.
Knowledge of geospatial legislation, municipal compliance frameworks, and ISO standards.
Pay: From R20 000,00 per month
