About the Role
Job Purpose
The
Infrastructure Draftsman (Civil 3D & GIS)
is responsible for preparing detailed, accurate 2D and 3D civil engineering drawings, alignment profiles, utility layouts, surface models, and earthwork calculations using AutoCAD Civil 3D and AutoCAD. The role plays a key part in supporting infrastructure projects—including roads, highways, storm water drainage, sewerage, water supply, and utility networks—from concept design through construction, final
As-Built submission, and GIS mapping
in full compliance with local municipal and utility authority standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, Modeling & As-Built Drafting
Develop detailed civil and infrastructure models using
AutoCAD Civil 3D
, including digital terrain models (DTM), ground surfaces, corridors, cross-sections, and longitudinal profiles.
Draft multi-utility networks (storm water, foul sewer, potable water, irrigation, firefighting, wet and dry utilities) in compliance with project and local authority standards.
Perform grading, corridor modeling, alignment creation, and volume calculations (cut and fill quantity take-offs) in Civil 3D.
Prepare comprehensive As-Built Drawings
based on final site survey data, redline markups, and actual field installations for road networks, levels, and underground utility assets.
Authority Compliance & GIS Deliverables
Format and convert CAD/Civil 3D As-Built drawings into GIS-compliant datasets
(e.g., Shapefiles, Geodatabase formats, spatial attribute tagging) as required by local authorities, municipalities, and utility service providers.
Ensure all As-Built plans and GIS spatial data conform strictly to local authority submission guidelines, coordinate reference systems (e.g., national grid/datum), attribute schema, and layer naming conventions.
Identify and resolve utility clashes across discipline layouts using Civil 3D clash detection tools and spatial coordination.
Coordinate closely with Land Surveyors and GIS Specialists to verify survey points, coordinate accuracy, invert levels, and asset attributes prior to final authority submittal.
Standard & Quality Control
Maintain drawing register logs, revision controls, CAD standard libraries, and GIS attribute metadata across project deliverables.
Ensure all CAD/GIS drawings comply with company standards, layering conventions, sheet setups, and authority drafting frameworks.
Assist in resolving technical comments or NOC/As-Built rejection feedback from municipal and government utility authorities.
Requirements & Qualifications:
Education & Experience
Education:
Diploma or Associate Degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Drafting, GIS, or a related technical field.
Experience:
Minimum 3–5 years of experience as an Infrastructure Draftsman specializing in roads, grading, wet/dry utility networks, and
As-Built/GIS authority submissions
.
Proven track record in preparing and securing authority approval for final As-Built drawings and GIS data packages.
Technical Skills
Software Expertise:
AutoCAD Civil 3D
(Advanced proficiency: surfaces, corridors, pipe networks, alignments, grading, profiles).
AutoCAD
(Advanced 2D/3D).
GIS Software
(QGIS, ArcGIS, or AutoCAD Map 3D/Civil 3D GIS tools for data export, attribute tagging, and shapefile creation).
Navisworks
(Basic to intermediate knowledge for clash detection is an advantage).
Authority & Spatial Knowledge:
In-depth understanding of local authority submission workflows, NOC procedures, and As-Built/GIS submission standards.
Strong understanding of spatial coordinate systems, georeferencing, survey data import/export, and GIS data structuring.
Solid understanding of infrastructure construction details (manholes, catch basins, pipe beddings, thrust blocks, road pavements).
Core Competencies
High attention to detail and spatial precision in drawing layout and technical drafting.
Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines and manage multiple authority submittals simultaneously.
Strong team communication skills to liaise with project engineers, land surveyors, consultants, and municipal representatives.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
On-time delivery of accurate shop drawings, plan/profiles, and As-Built drawing packages.
First-time approval rate of As-Built and GIS submissions with local authorities/utility providers.
Full compliance of exported GIS layers and attribute tables with local municipal spatial data guidelines.
