Introduction
Do you possess strong analytical skills and are you open to a unique mental and physical challenge in a varied work environment? Do you hold a WO (university) degree in fields such as Geology, Geography, Technology, Biometrics, or Nuclear Technology? The Dutch Land Forces are seeking a Geospatial Analyst Officer (Intelligence & Security – I&V GSA). Your workplace will be at the barracks, but also during exercises and deployments.
Note: Attendance at the info day on 13 May is mandatory to participate in the application process.
If selected, you will be appointed by the Ministry of Defence as an ‘Officier Inlichtingen & Veiligheid (I&V) Geospatial Analist (GSA)’.
What You’ll Do
As an I&V GSA, you’ll work in a multidisciplinary team of analysts, supporting missions, projects, deployments, and exercises—lasting from a few weeks up to 4–6 months.
Your core responsibility is to describe and analyze the spatial and temporal aspects of the physical environment and events occurring within it. Your analyses may include:
Suitability analyses
Terrain analyses
Geostatistics
Remote sensing analyses
Your geospatial insights will be integrated with analyses from other disciplines to build operational situational awareness and produce intelligence products that support military planning and decision-making.
Key Benefits
Salary: Gross base salary of €4,052–€4,463 per month, with allowances, favorable travel expense reimbursement, and comprehensive pension and health insurance—resulting in a net income that’s pleasantly surprising.
Work Environment: You’ll become part of an exceptionally close-knit team—unmatched anywhere else.
Career Development: Defensie is not only an employer but also a major training institution, offering opportunities for personal and professional growth.
After attending the info day, you may join the selection process, which lasts ~6–9 months and includes multiple stages (see details at the bottom of the page).
Where You’ll Work
You’ll be stationed at the Joint ISTAR Commando (JISTARC) in ’t Harde. ISTAR stands for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance. JISTARC collects and analyzes information to provide military commanders with the most complete and up-to-date operational picture possible.
As a GSA, you’ll be both a geospatial specialist and a military officer. While your primary workplace is the barracks in ’t Harde, you’ll also participate in domestic and international exercises and deployments (e.g., missions in Mali, Lithuania, and others). You’ll collaborate closely with international partners of the Dutch Armed Forces—and may support police investigations under Defensie’s third core task.
Training Pathway
Before starting your role, you’ll complete:
Defensiebrede Korte Officiersopleiding (DKOO) – a 1-year officer training at the Royal Military Academy (KMA) in Breda.
Vaktechnische Opleiding (VTO) Intelligence & Security (I&V) – a 7-month specialized training at the Intelligence & Security Academy (ISA).
Upon successful completion, you’ll begin your career as an I&V Geospatial Analyst Officer in the Land Forces—and receive additional geo-specific training during your first year on the job.
