The local business sector is locally, nationally, and especially internationally oriented. Ålesund was built on fishing and sealing—and the Ålesund region remains world-leading in the marine and maritime industries. Several of Norway’s largest fishing companies and aquaculture firms are based here. Ålesund has Norway’s largest cruise port, largest fishing port, and second-largest container port. It is also Norway’s largest export port for fishery products. The municipality is the region’s largest public transport hub, with around two million passengers annually using buses or ferries in Ålesund (2016 data). Ålesund city is widely renowned for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture—towers, spires, and ornate façades line the streets. The city lies at the entrance to the fjord system of Sunnmøre and stretches north to Ona beyond the Romsdal coast. Other attractions in the municipality include Ona Lighthouse and stunning mountains, fjords, and nature just outside the city center. We are a university municipality with close collaboration with NTNU at Ålesund Campus. The campus also hosts Ålesund Future Lab – U4SSC. As a major employer with over 4,400 skilled and dedicated employees carrying out vital public tasks, we emphasize our core values: open, engaged, and courageous. Our vision for the municipality is “national competitiveness, regional attractiveness, and local identity.” If you are seeking a meaningful job with varied and challenging tasks, Ålesund Municipality offers an exciting opportunity.
