Job Description
When the fire department deploys, every second counts. Thanks to your work, firefighters have up-to-date and clear accessibility maps containing vital information about buildings, risks, and facilities. You ensure the right information is available at the right time for colleagues in the field.
Are you skilled at processing information, comfortable working independently, and passionate about supporting the fire service? This is your chance to make a real impact.
Your Responsibilities
As a GIS Specialist for the Fire Department, you create and maintain digital accessibility maps for fire response teams. You collect and analyze critical data on objects with special characteristics or elevated risk during fires and accidents—including:
Industrial complexes
Infrastructure facilities (e.g., highway, railway, and metro tunnels)
Locations handling hazardous substances
Buildings with vulnerable populations (e.g., hospitals, nursing homes)
You source this data from architectural drawings, floor plans, and permits—or verify it on-site. Your maps feed directly into the Mobile Operational Information System (MOI), giving deploying teams instant access to essential operational intelligence.
Key Tasks Include:
Creating and updating digital accessibility maps;
Processing information from architectural drawings and floor plans;
Mapping special facilities and associated risks;
Visually representing operational information using symbols, colors, and text;
Coordinating with colleagues from other departments, including Risk and Crisis Management and the deployment team.
These maps are developed in QGIS and used by all deploying teams during orientation, exercises, and incident response.
You work closely with colleagues from Risk and Crisis Management, who gather and assess information from existing construction plans, new building designs, and permit applications. You translate this data into practical, field-ready operational information—effectively serving as the “support unit” behind the red fire engine: your work helps frontline teams act safely and effectively.
Who You Are
You enjoy researching, analyzing, and clearly presenting information;
You can distinguish essential from secondary details and extract operationally relevant insights from large datasets;
If information is missing, you proactively and assertively obtain it, collaborating across departments;
You’re open to taking on supportive tasks needed to prepare the fire department for incident response—including updating systems.
Requirements
MBO/HBO level of working and thinking;
Affinity with the fire service or prior knowledge of fire service operations;
Strong digital skills and experience with MS Office;
Affinity with information management, GIS, or cartographic materials;
Intrinsic motivation to continuously develop yourself.
Experience with QGIS is a plus, but not required—we provide training to ensure you become proficient in our systems and workflows. As AI and other technologies evolve, you’ll adapt and integrate new tools effectively into your work.
Your Team
You’ll join the Operationele Voorbereiding (Operational Preparation) department, specifically the Advies, Infra & Operationele Informatie (Advisory, Infrastructure & Operational Information) team. Together with the Planvorming Kerntaken Brandweer and Onderzoek, Analyse & Digi teams, we form the full Operational Preparation department.
Terms of Employment
Scale 8, gross monthly salary between €3,230 and €4,617 (based on 36 hours/week);

Flexible allowance of 18.63%—use it for extra leave, a new bike, holiday pay, and more;
Emphasis on vitality and health: €20 net/month for fitness or on-site sports;
Hybrid work model: remote and office work coordinated with your team and manager; home-working allowance provided;
Generous pension scheme via ABP: employer covers two-thirds of your premium;
Terms align with the CAR UWO Veiligheidsregio’s agreement effective 1 August 2026.

This vacancy is open to internal candidates;
Simultaneous internal and external recruitment; internal candidates have priority if equally qualified;
