About the Role

Danish Geodata Agency Seeks GIS Specialists for Nautical Chart Production in Digital Transformation The Danish Geodata Agency is seeking a total of seven GIS specialists for the Center for Nautical Charts and Marine Data: five for the Nautical Chart Unit and two for the Procedures and Quality Unit. The Center is responsible for nautical mapping of Danish and Greenlandic waters. We are currently in an exciting development phase and are looking for professionals with a solid understanding of geospatial data who can contribute to the production of both paper and electronic nautical charts—leveraging existing datasets and adapting as new standards and systems are introduced. You may apply for one or both units. Please indicate in your application which unit(s) you are applying for; if applying for both, please also state your preferred unit. About the Position The Center for Nautical Charts and Marine Data comprises several units jointly supporting safe navigation in Denmark and Greenland. While the Nautical Chart Unit and the Procedures and Quality Unit have distinct core responsibilities (described below), their staff collectively contribute to the Center’s chart production. You will primarily work with recurring tasks within your area of expertise, using various digital tools—enabling you to build strong professional skills and potentially specialize. At the same time, the Center is continuously developing its digital solutions and products in line with new standards, which may lead to evolving workflows and emerging competency needs over the coming years. Therefore, we expect you to be open to continuous learning and adaptable to changing tasks. We also aim to flexibly deploy staff competencies across units within the Center. Nautical Chart Unit – Five Positions You will be assigned to the Nautical Chart Unit and primarily work with electronic nautical charts (ENCs) and paper charts. The unit maintains and produces charts according to current standards, while gradually implementing new ones. Consequently, your responsibilities will evolve alongside the digital transformation. Your tasks may include: Processing bathymetric data at various scales for electronic nautical charts Producing and maintaining paper and electronic nautical charts—including data compilation and processing Validating against international standards Updating and maintaining existing products and processes Digitizing data and related tasks Contributing to the Center’s work on procedures and quality assurance in line with international standards Procedures and Quality Unit – Two Positions You will join the Data and Quality Team, which works with geospatial data, digitalization, and data quality for nautical chart production. Your tasks may include: Mapping new coastlines using satellite imagery and registering rocks and wrecks GIS digitization—for example, extracting depths from historical survey sheets and nautical charts in Danish and Greenlandic waters Reviewing and verifying data from historical archives and entering data into databases Processing and quality-controlling land-based geospatial data and integrating it into cartographic products In both units, you will become part of a team with an informal working culture, where you will have the opportunity to shape your own tasks and influence the Center’s future workflows. We collaborate closely with other functions within the Center for Nautical Charts and Marine Data, so we place high value on collaboration, flexibility, and a willingness to work across functions. At the same time, you must be able to focus and deeply engage with specific tasks. About You Prior experience in nautical chart production is not required, but it is an advantage to have a solid understanding of geospatial data and experience with ArcGIS Pro, databases, and data processing. We therefore welcome candidates with relevant education in GIS or chart production. Relevant backgrounds include training as a cartographic or surveying technician, technical designer, or a bachelor’s or master’s degree in geography, geomatics (land surveying), engineering, or a related field. We value your understanding of geospatial data, interest in production work, and motivation to contribute to the digital transformation. We are looking for someone who: Works both process- and results-oriented Is proactive and takes responsibility for completing tasks within given frameworks and deadlines Has experience with GIS—preferably on the ESRI platform Has a solid understanding of geospatial data, geodatabases, cartography, and projections Thrives in a production-oriented environment Is approachable and team-oriented Understands that our products are critical to maritime safety We also value initiative and the ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in Danish and English.
