About the Role
Länsstyrelsen in Uppsala County, Environmental Department, Nature Conservation Unit
Do you want to help lay the groundwork for implementing Sweden’s new national restoration ordinance? We are now recruiting a staff member to update the national database on the status and distribution of habitat types within protected areas in Uppsala County.
Nature Conservation Unit
The unit currently comprises 15 employees and is one of five units within the Environmental Department. Our main responsibility is area-based conservation, including the establishment of nature reserves, nature conservation agreements, and Natura 2000 areas, along with related tasks. Some staff also work on action programs for threatened species, control of invasive species, and habitat restoration.
We are now seeking a colleague who can contribute to implementing the new national restoration ordinance. The work is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues responsible for actions, restoration, and management of specific species and habitat types.
Job Duties
You are expected to update the national database with information on the distribution and status of habitat types within protected areas.
A large part of the work therefore involves gathering information from existing sources, colleagues’ expertise, and—in some cases—remote sensing or field survey data. Data compilation and handling are performed in ArcGIS Pro and in the joint case-handling support system used by county administrative boards and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency—NNK.
NNK is the tool used by the county administrative board to review and update information through editing of geometries and attributes. Through this, both the county administrative board and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency gain access to up-to-date information on habitat distribution and status, enabling prioritization of restoration measures.
The work is carried out in close collaboration with coordinators and colleagues working on area-based conservation, habitat restoration, and management of protected nature.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has:
A higher education degree in biology, ecology, nature conservation, or equivalent;
University credits / Vocational Higher Education (YH) in GIS, or documented experience working with the GIS software ArcGIS Pro;
Good knowledge of habitat types under the Species and Habitats Directive.
It is meritorious if you have:
Experience with status assessments or mapping of habitat types, particularly natural habitats;
Experience working with the NNK case-handling system used by county administrative boards and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency;
Experience with remote sensing (e.g., interpretation of aerial photographs, stereoscopic interpretation);
Familiarity with ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, e.g., using Experience Builder and FieldMaps;
Experience working within public authorities.
You are expected to support other colleagues at the county administrative board with your specialist knowledge. The work is complex and requires you to be structured, collaborative, and able to communicate effectively with staff and external stakeholders—while also being capable of working independently and driving processes forward. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and new tasks as they arise are essential.
You will represent the County Administrative Board in a trustworthy and professional manner. We place great importance on your personal qualities.
Terms of Employment
This is a fixed-term (special fixed-term) employment for 12 months, with start date by agreement. Your official title at the authority will be Case Officer.
Additional Information
As a public-sector employee, you are expected to uphold the shared values of the Swedish state and contribute to developing a public administration characterized by democracy, human rights, legal certainty, efficiency, and accessibility.
