About the Role
About Terramira
Terramira is a new player in Earth Intelligence, born from the combined expertise of NEO, eLEAF, and 52impact. NEO, the oldest private Earth observation company in the Netherlands, has been operating for 30 years. We currently have around 100 colleagues. We translate satellite and sensor data into clear insights that help organizations make better decisions.
We support a wide range of challenges in climate, water, agriculture, infrastructure, and nature—but also in safety and security, both domestically and internationally. Within our Safety & Security division, we develop solutions that give organizations real-time insight into what’s happening on and around the Earth—enabling preparedness and recovery. Think, for example, of terrain and infrastructure analysis for defense or support during emergencies.
Our strength lies in combining geospatial data, remote sensing, AI, and domain expertise. We build technology and intelligence that isn’t just theoretically interesting—but actually used to support real-world decision-making.
We’re a growing organization with short communication lines, an open culture, and ample room for initiative. You’ll collaborate with colleagues across diverse expertise areas and have the opportunity to directly contribute to impactful solutions.
About the Role
As a Senior Developer/Architect in Safety & Security, you define how our technology for safety and resilience challenges is structured. You design the systems that convert large volumes of satellite, radar, and drone data into timely, reliable information—trusted by multiple countries and organizations.
You look beyond the current project: a core principle at Terramira is Build once, Scale forever. What we build for Safety & Security must be reusable across other customers and applications. You ensure our team’s solutions fit within both the Safety & Security and broader Terramira architectures—grounded in sound principles and patterns.
What you’ll do:
You’ll zoom out and in: you oversee the big picture of our Safety & Security platform, its integration with Terramira’s broader tech stack, and dive deep where needed. You translate diverse customer requirements—from terrain accessibility to infrastructure analysis—into a coherent, scalable, and reusable architecture.
You’ll work closely with developers, geospatial engineers, data scientists, and domain experts—guiding them without limiting their creative freedom.
Concretely, this includes:
Designing the system and data platform according to appropriate architecture principles and patterns;
Making and justifying technical choices, clearly communicating trade-offs between scope, quality, time, and cost;
Designing and implementing workflows and data pipelines using tools like Dagster and Ray to ensure scalable and reproducible processing of large geospatial datasets;
Defining how data is stored and accessed (e.g., using Parquet);
Proactively identifying technical risks and proposing mitigation strategies;
Establishing and maintaining standards, guidelines, and reference architectures to align teams;
Coaching colleagues and participating in code and design reviews;
Leading by example as Lead Developer—driving the development of the system/platform forward.
What we’re looking for:
We’re seeking someone energized by designing systems that remain resilient as scale, customer needs, or data sources evolve. You have a strong background in software or data engineering and have matured into a role where you primarily shape direction within a team of 5–8 people. You can distill complex problems into clear design decisions—and explain them to both technical and non-technical audiences.
You also identify with the following:
Extensive experience in software development and system design, including several years in an architecture or lead engineer role;
Strong Python skills;
Practical experience with workflow orchestration—preferably with Dagster;
Hands-on experience with parallel processing of large datasets—preferably with Ray;
Experience with Parquet and designing efficient data storage solutions;
Knowledge of architecture principles and patterns, and the ability to apply them to scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems;
The ability to zoom out, see the big picture, and make decisions that remain sound years ahead;
Strong communication skills and the ability to involve stakeholders, teams, and partners in your design process;
Proficiency in both Dutch and English.
Experience with the following is not required but is a plus:
Affinity with geospatial data, GIS, and Earth Observation (satellite, radar, drone data);
Experience with PostGIS / PostgreSQL and OGC standards;
Experience with cloud environments (e.g., AWS), Docker, and CI/CD;
Experience with sovereign, independent environments;
Knowledge of security and data governance in defense or government contexts.
What we offer:
At Terramira, you’ll have room to grow personally and professionally while helping shape a dynamic, growing organization. You’ll work on technically compelling challenges using modern geospatial, cloud, and AI technologies—alongside colleagues with diverse expertise. You’ll enjoy significant autonomy in organizing your work and ample opportunity to experiment with new ideas.
In addition, you can expect:
A contract for 32 to 40 hours per week;
Flexible working hours and the option to work hybrid: on average two days per week from our office in Amersfoort, and optionally one day in Eindhoven;
Offices located next to the train station and within walking distance of the city center;
An informal culture with short communication lines;
25 vacation days, with the option to purchase an extra week;
A salary aligned with your experience and background;
Ample opportunities for personal and professional development;
The chance to work with cutting-edge technology and complex geospatial challenges.
In short: a place where you won’t just work on interesting projects—you’ll also have real influence over what we build as an organization and as a team.
