ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
At Your Power Labs, we're building advanced geospatial and AI-powered technology to transform how solar energy systems are designed, analysed, and deployed.
Our platform combines high-resolution aerial imagery, elevation data, computer vision, computational geometry, and intelligent algorithms to analyse rooftops, identify roof structures, calculate solar potential, and generate accurate solar panel layouts.
We're looking for a technically strong Geospatial Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering problems and building algorithms that work reliably with real-world spatial data.
THIS IS NOT A TRADITIONAL GIS ROLE.
We want engineers who understand the mathematics and geometry behind spatial operations, not just how to use geospatial libraries.
You'll solve challenging problems involving polygon geometry, 3D roof structures, geometric transformations, spatial relationships, algorithm optimisation, and large-scale geospatial processing.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔹
COMPUTATIONAL GEOMETRY & SPATIAL ALGORITHMS
• Design and implement algorithms for polygon intersection, clipping, buffering, containment, and geometric transformations.
• Develop solutions for polygon splitting, merging, simplification, and topology correction.
• Work with irregular polygons, overlapping surfaces, holes, and invalid geometries.
• Implement calculations involving angles, distances, vectors, planes, slopes, azimuths, and spatial relationships.
• Develop algorithms for identifying and refining roof faces, boundaries, ridges, and obstructions.
• Optimise geometric operations for accuracy, numerical stability, and performance.
🔹 GEOSPATIAL PROCESSING & SOLAR ANALYSIS
• Build raster and vector processing pipelines using aerial imagery, DSMs, and elevation datasets.
• Transform computer vision predictions into geometrically accurate roof structures.
• Develop algorithms for roof slope, orientation, surface area, and spatial analysis.
• Support automated solar panel placement, collision detection, setbacks, and layout optimisation.
• Contribute to shading analysis and solar energy assessment workflows.
• Handle coordinate transformations, projections, and raster-to-vector processing.
🔹
BACKEND ENGINEERING & PERFORMANCE
• Develop reliable backend services using Python and FastAPI.
• Build efficient spatial processing workflows and reusable geometry components.
• Work with PostgreSQL/PostGIS for spatial storage, indexing, and queries.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in geometry-heavy pipelines.
• Write automated tests covering geometric edge cases, numerical accuracy, and algorithm correctness.
• Collaborate with computer vision, backend, frontend, and QA engineers.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
CORE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✓ 2–3+ years of professional experience in software engineering, computational geometry, or geospatial development.
✓ Strong understanding of computational geometry — our most important technical requirement.
✓ Excellent Python programming, algorithm design, debugging, and optimisation skills.
✓ Strong understanding of 2D geometry and practical knowledge of 3D geometric concepts.
✓ Mathematical reasoning involving polygons, vectors, transformations, intersections, and spatial relationships.
✓ Experience implementing geometric algorithms rather than relying exclusively on existing library functions.
✓ Experience with Shapely, Rasterio, GDAL, GeoPandas, or equivalent technologies.
✓ Understanding of raster/vector data, coordinate systems, and spatial operations.
✓ Experience building backend APIs, preferably using FastAPI.
✓ Working knowledge of PostgreSQL/PostGIS and SQL.
✓ Familiarity with Git, Docker, and modern development practices.
✓ Strong analytical thinking, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
✓ Good written and verbal English communication skills.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
• You understand how geometric algorithms work, not just which libraries implement them.
• You can solve challenging problems involving invalid, overlapping, and irregular polygons.
• You translate mathematical concepts into clean, efficient, production-quality Python code.
• You enjoy solving problems where existing libraries don't provide reliable solutions.
• You understand trade-offs between geometric precision, computational performance, and data quality.
• You take ownership of technical challenges and validate solutions through meaningful testing.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
NICE TO HAVE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
• Experience with GEOS, CGAL, OpenCV, or similar libraries.
• Knowledge of linear algebra, numerical methods, optimisation, or 3D geometry.
• Experience with LiDAR, DSM, DEM, DTM, or aerial imagery.
• Familiarity with PyTorch, YOLO, or computer vision pipelines.
• Experience with roof extraction, shading analysis, solar panel placement, or building footprint analysis.
• Experience optimising large-scale spatial processing systems.
• Familiarity with AWS S3, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure.
