GIS Analyst / Aerial Image Interpreter – Explosive Ordnance Disposal Support (m/f/d)

Position Overview
Even 80 years after the end of World War II, the Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf continues to address the legacy of the war, particularly the risk posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO). This position supports the agency’s preventive explosive ordnance clearance efforts. Prior to ground-disturbing construction activities, land parcels must be assessed for potential UXO presence. To this end, geospatial data and approximately 300,000 historical aerial photographs from the WWII era are available for analysis.
In the so-called aerial image interpretation process, you will analyze these images, conduct hazard assessments, document potential risk areas in the GIS, and recommend further UXO clearance measures where necessary.
Key Responsibilities
Multitemporal, stereoscopic interpretation of WWII-era aerial imagery to identify UXO suspect areas
Aerial image orientation and georeferencing
Hazard assessment and recommendation of follow-up actions
Documentation of results in the ArcGIS geoinformation system
Qualifications
Completed bachelor’s degree or diploma (FH/Diplom I) in Geodesy, Surveying, Geomatics, Geography, or another geoscience discipline by September 30, 2026; or
Completed bachelor’s degree or diploma (FH/Diplom I) in a related mathematics, natural science, or engineering field, plus professional experience in aerial image interpretation or explosive ordnance clearance
Strict requirement: Unrestricted screen compatibility and proven ability for stereoscopic vision
High level of diligence, resilience, and decision-making competence, given the inherent hazards of the task
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with modern GIS (especially ArcGIS)
Experience in the interpretation and orientation of aerial or satellite imagery
Familiarity with photogrammetric software (e.g., ERDAS IMAGINE)
