About the Role
Company: 4People
You build our internal GIS team from scratch. What is currently outsourced will now be brought in-house and developed into a strong, internal discipline.
Are you a GIS specialist who wants to do more than just create maps? Do you want to set up a department, attract talent, and lay the spatial foundation for complex energy projects? This is your opportunity.
Responsibilities
We are specialists in underground and above-ground infrastructure for heat supply. For numerous clients, we work project-based or under multi-year agreements to deliver sustainable energy solutions for the future.
Our projects are complex and technically challenging: think of replacing a district heating pipeline beneath a city canal—using temporary bridges and cofferdams—while maintaining normal ship traffic. Accurate spatial data is essential.
Until now, we’ve outsourced GIS work. We want to change that. You will build internal knowledge, models, and a dedicated team.
Your key tasks include:
Building an internal GIS team: defining structure, workflows, staffing, and scaling with organizational needs.
Recruiting team members—including individuals without prior GIS backgrounds but with strong potential to learn.
Gradually taking over GIS responsibilities from the external provider and ensuring a smooth transition.
Establishing and maintaining connections with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., project teams, clients, network operators, municipalities).
Translating client questions into clear spatial challenges and processing them expertly into GIS models.
Setting up, managing, and maintaining data, models, and mapping products using ArcGIS and QGIS—ensuring reliability, reusability, and accessibility for projects and management.
Advising project teams with spatial analyses that support design, planning, and execution.
Monitoring data and product quality, and driving standardization and continuous improvement.
Requirements
Completed HBO or WO degree in geo-information, civil engineering, geography, or a related field.
Demonstrable experience with GIS, preferably in infrastructure, energy, or spatial planning environments.
Proficiency with ArcGIS and QGIS, and the ability to select the right tool for each application.
Strong analytical skills to interpret client needs and translate them into practical GIS solutions.
Experience with—or ambition to—build and mentor a team.
Proactive and relational: you easily connect with diverse stakeholders.
Self-motivated, independent, and able to maintain oversight in a growing organization.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical topics.
Willingness to visit project sites.
