Description
Do you have strong analytical skills and are you open to a unique mental and physical challenge in a varied work environment? And do you hold a WO (university) degree in fields such as Geology, Geography, or Technology/Biometrics/Nuclear Technology? The Dutch Army is looking for an Intelligence & Security Geospatial Analyst (I&V GSA).
Work location: At the barracks, as well as during exercises and deployments.
Important note: Attendance at the info day on 13 May is mandatory to participate in the application process.
If selected, you will be appointed by the Ministry of Defence as an ‘Intelligence & Security (I&V) Geospatial Analyst (GSA)’.
What You’ll Do
As an I&V GSA, you will work in a multidisciplinary team of analysts, supporting missions, projects, deployments, and exercises—lasting from a few weeks up to 4–6 months.
Your role is to describe and analyze the spatial and temporal aspects of the physical environment and events occurring within it. Your analyses may include:
Suitability analyses
Terrain analysis
Geostatistics
Remote sensing analysis
Your geospatial insights will be integrated with analyses from other disciplines to gain operational situational awareness and produce intelligence products that support military planning and decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct geospatial analysis to support military operations
Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams
Participate in domestic and international exercises and deployments (e.g., Mali, Lithuania)
Support police investigations under Defence’s third core task
Work closely with international partners of the Dutch Armed Forces
Perks of the Role
Salary: €4,052 – €4,463 gross per month (scale 23–30), plus allowances, travel expense reimbursement, pension, and health insurance—resulting in a net income that is pleasantly surprising.
Work environment: Be part of a tight-knit team—unmatched in cohesion.
Career development: Defence is not only an employer but also a major training institution, offering opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Where You’ll Work
You will be stationed at the Joint ISTAR Commando (JISTARC) in ’t Harde. ISTAR stands for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance. JISTARC collects and analyzes information to provide military commanders with the most complete and up-to-date operational picture possible.
As a GSA, you are not only a geospatial specialist but also a military officer. While your primary workplace is the barracks in ’t Harde, you will also participate in domestic and international exercises and deployments. Because these often take place in an international context, you will work closely with international partners of the Dutch Armed Forces.
A supporting role in police investigations is also possible under Defence’s third core task.
Training Path
Before starting your role, you will complete:
Defence-Wide Short Officer Training (DKOO) – 1 year at the Royal Military Academy (KMA) in Breda
Technical Specialization Training (VTO) Intelligence & Security (I&V) – 7 months at the Intelligence & Security Academy (ISA)
Upon successful completion, you will begin your career as an Intelligence & Security Geospatial Analyst in the Dutch Army. Once on the job, you will receive additional geospatial-specific training.
Application Process
After attending the mandatory info day on 13 May, you may join the selection procedure, which takes approximately 6–9 months and consists of several components (see the bottom of the page for details).
