About the Role
Nature Conservation Unit
The unit currently comprises 15 staff members and is one of five units within the Environmental Department. Our primary responsibility is area-based protection, including the establishment of nature reserves, nature conservation agreements, and Natura 2000 areas, along with related tasks. Some staff also work on action programs for threatened species, control of invasive species, and habitat restoration.
We are now recruiting a staff member to contribute to implementing the new national restoration ordinance. The work is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues responsible for actions, restoration, and management of specific species and habitat types.
Main Duties
You are expected to update the national database with information on the distribution and status of habitat types within protected areas.
A large part of the work involves gathering information from existing sources, colleagues’ expertise, and—in some cases—remote sensing or field survey data. Data compilation and handling are performed in ArcGIS Pro and in the joint case-handling support system NNK, used by county administrative boards and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
NNK is the tool used by the county administrative board to review and update information through editing geometries and attributes. This enables both the county administrative board and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to access up-to-date information on habitat distribution and status, thereby supporting prioritization of restoration efforts.
The work is carried out in close collaboration with coordinators and colleagues working on area protection, restoration, and management of protected nature.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has:
A higher education degree in biology, ecology, nature conservation, or equivalent;
University credits/YH education—or documented experience—in GIS, specifically with the ArcGIS Pro software;
Good knowledge of habitat types under the EU Habitats Directive.
Meritorious qualifications include:
Experience with habitat status assessments or mapping, particularly of habitat types;
Experience using the NNK case-handling system;
Experience with remote sensing (e.g., interpretation of aerial images and stereoscopic interpretation);
Familiarity with ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, e.g., Experience Builder and FieldMaps;
Experience working in public authorities.
You are expected to support other staff at the county administrative board with your specialist knowledge. The work is complex and requires you to be structured, collaborative, and able to communicate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders—while also being capable of working independently and driving processes forward. Flexibility and adaptability to changing conditions and emerging tasks are essential.
You are expected to represent the county administrative board in a trustworthy and professional manner. Personal qualities are highly valued.
Terms of Employment
This is a fixed-term (special fixed-term) appointment for 12 months, with start date by agreement. Your official title within the authority will be Case Officer.
Additional Information
As a public-sector employee, you are expected to uphold the national value base and contribute to developing a public administration culture characterized by democracy, human rights, legal certainty, efficiency, and accessibility.
