About the Role

Company: Uppsala kommun Title: GIS Coordinator Are you an experienced and creative GIS developer who wants to work closely with the municipality’s planning and management of parks, playgrounds, recreational areas, and trees? Do you want to work in an organization where GIS is developed as a vital tool? If so, this may be the role for you! You will join the Parks and Nature Department, specifically placed in the Planning Unit for Parks and Nature. The department’s mission is to plan, maintain, operate, and develop the municipality’s green areas—including parks, playgrounds, green spaces, forests, nature reserves, and recreational areas. The Planning Unit for Parks and Nature is a key resource in cross-municipal issues related to sustainability, public health, and urban development. We work on planning matters across a broad time horizon—from next year’s operational season to long-term management of the city’s tree stock over a 100-year perspective. In between, the unit handles broader urban development issues such as the city’s and urban areas’ green infrastructure and children’s outdoor environments, as well as local matters including development plans, park and nature reserve management plans, hiking trails, and water-related measures. Within the department, many employees use, manage, and develop GIS to varying degrees, but today there is a gap in expert knowledge and coordination. You will work closely with the municipality’s central GIS function and the Geodata Unit, part of the City Planning Administration. Job Duties Within the department’s operations, numerous GIS solutions manage and visualize geographic information, as well as the geospatial data for which the department is responsible. These solutions have been developed to streamline and enhance operations (e.g., map layers, databases) and to make information visible to citizens and businesses (e.g., websites and StoryMaps). These tools require continuous development, adaptation, and maintenance—requiring both technical expertise and a strong understanding of the department’s operations. You will be a key member of cross-functional teams, contributing your expertise to projects aimed at improving and ensuring decision support, urban planning, and digital services. Your responsibilities include: Developing and customizing GIS applications to meet operational needs. Integrating and quality-assuring geographic data from various internal and external sources. Maintaining spatial databases in collaboration with other parts of the municipality. Visualizing geographic information through interactive maps and user-friendly interfaces. Contributing across the entire development lifecycle—from requirements analysis to implementation, support, and further development. Information management. Ongoing work to register supporting documentation for further analysis, maintenance, etc. Maintaining StoryMaps, dashboards, Arcade scripts, maps (layers, pop-ups), and analyses. Qualifications Experience working with geographic databases and map-based decision support tools. Experience with ArcGIS Pro and related Esri applications within the ArcGIS platform, such as Dashboards, Field Maps, Experience Builder, and Survey123. Proficiency in Microsoft 365. Fluent written and spoken Swedish and English (a requirement for the position). Valid Category B driving license (mandatory). Meritorious qualifications: Experience within the department’s area of responsibility: parks, playgrounds, green spaces, forests, nature reserves, and recreational areas. Experience with FME or other tools for automated data conversion and maintenance. Prior experience with municipal databases related to parks, greenery, trees, infrastructure, or urban development. Personal Qualities Proactive and independent, taking ownership of your tasks and driving processes forward in a structured and efficient manner. Open to change, with a development-oriented mindset—eager to learn new ideas, methods, and working methods, and to implement them in practice. Strong collaboration skills: you are attentive, communicative, and constructive in your interactions. Pedagogical insight and the ability to adapt your communication to the needs and prerequisites of your audience to ensure clear messaging.
