Job Description
When the fire department deploys, every second counts. Thanks to your work, firefighters have up-to-date and clear accessibility maps containing crucial information about buildings, risks, and facilities. You ensure the right information is available at the right time for colleagues in the field.
Are you skilled at processing information, comfortable working independently, and passionate about supporting the fire service? This is your opportunity to make a real impact.
Your Role
As a Fire Department GIS Specialist, you create and maintain digital accessibility maps for the fire department. You collect and analyze critical data on objects with special features or elevated risk during fires and accidents—such as industrial complexes, infrastructure facilities (highway, rail, and metro tunnels), locations handling hazardous substances, and buildings with vulnerable occupants (e.g., hospitals and nursing homes).
You obtain this data from architectural drawings, floor plans, and permits—or conduct on-site verification when needed.
Your work provides essential support for rapid and safe deployment, enabling responding units to access precise information in real time via the Mobile Operational Information System (MOI).
In summary, your responsibilities include:
Creating and updating digital accessibility maps;
Processing information from architectural drawings and floor plans;
Mapping special facilities and associated risks;
Visually representing operational information using symbols, colors, and text;
Coordinating with colleagues from other departments, including Risk and Crisis Management and the deployment team.
These maps are created in QGIS and used by all responding personnel during orientation, exercises, and incident response. You work closely with colleagues from Risk and Crisis Management, who gather and assess information from existing and new construction plans and permit processes. You translate this data into practical, field-ready operational intelligence—effectively serving as the "support crew" behind the fire engine: your work helps frontline staff respond safely and effectively.
You...
...enjoy researching, analyzing, and presenting information clearly. You can distinguish key points from details and extract only what is operationally relevant—even from large volumes of data. When information is missing, you proactively and assertively obtain it through collaboration with other departments and are willing to take on supporting tasks as needed to prepare the fire department for incident response—including updating systems.
Additionally:
You have an MBO/HBO level of working and analytical ability;
You have an affinity with the fire service or prior knowledge of fire service operations;
You have strong digital skills and experience with MS Office;
You have an affinity with information management, GIS, or cartography;
You are intrinsically motivated to continuously develop yourself.
Experience with QGIS is a plus, but not required. We ensure you receive training and become proficient in the systems and workflows used within the organization.
With emerging technologies like AI, the nature of the work will evolve. You will be able to adapt and integrate these developments appropriately.
Your Team
You will join the Operationele Voorbereiding (Operational Preparation) department, specifically the Advies, Infra & Operationele Informatie (Advisory, Infrastructure & Operational Information) team.
Together with the Planvorming Kerntaken Brandweer (Fire Department Core Tasks Planning) and Onderzoek, Analyse & Digi (Research, Analysis & Digital) teams, we form the Operationele Voorbereiding department.
Terms of Employment
You will be placed in scale 8, with a gross monthly salary of €3,230 to €4,617 (based on a 36-hour workweek);
The position is for 36 hours per week;
You receive a flexible allowance of 18.63%. Want extra leave hours? A new bicycle? Holiday pay? All options are possible!
We value vitality and health, offering a fitness scheme of up to €20 net per month or on-site fitness facilities;
We operate on a hybrid work model. Remote work and working hours are coordinated with your team and supervisor. When working from home, you are entitled to a home-working allowance;
We offer a favorable pension scheme via ABP: we cover two-thirds of your pension premium;
Terms of employment comply with the CAR UWO Veiligheidsregio’s agreement, effective 1 August 2026.

Recruitment is conducted simultaneously internally and externally. Internal candidates have priority in case of equal suitability;

Upon appointment, you must take the oath or affirmation of office;
