About the Urban Environment Department
The Urban Environment Department is responsible for the urban environment on streets and public squares. Year-round, it manages the operation and maintenance of streets and squares, winter road maintenance, urban horticulture, and greenery and planting. The department also implements climate and safety measures, as well as protective and temporary installations in public spaces.
About the Analysis & Support Unit
The Analysis & Support Unit manages and develops the department’s facility management systems and geodata handling, and leads process development for several of the department’s activities. Its mission is to enable analysis, description, and steering of the department’s operations using the data and IT systems under its responsibility. You will join a dedicated GIS team of senior colleagues and have the opportunity to influence the office’s digital transformation.
As a GIS engineer, you will take on a meaningful societal role—directly contributing to the daily lives of Stockholm residents and the development of the urban environment. You will have the chance to deepen your expertise as a GIS specialist while broadening your role and competencies in new GIS platforms, databases, and technologies.

Your Role
As a GIS engineer, you will have a broad and developmental role with an even split between operational work and collaboration/development:
Operational GIS Tasks (~50%):
Mapping and updating geographic data and facility registers
Surveying and collecting data to ensure current information
Conducting data analysis and processing, and ensuring result quality
Providing expert support on GIS matters to various units within the Traffic Office
Managing GIS tools and systems such as ArcGIS, QGIS, FME, DPMap, and Stockholm-specific tools (IsyRoad, TKGata)
Collaboration & Development (~50%):
Contributing to the establishment of routines, annual cycles, and documentation for GIS work
Disseminating knowledge of GIS capabilities and tools across the organization
Participating in the development of the Traffic Office’s GIS platforms and facility registers
Leading or participating in projects with external parties (e.g., City Planning Office, Building Control Office)
Serving as expert support and chairing administrative groups
Your Competence and Experience
To succeed in the role of GIS engineer, you must have:
A higher education degree in geographic IT, technical surveying, civil engineering, GIS, or another qualification deemed equivalent by the employer
Several years of work experience in GIS and geodata to demonstrate technical expertise
Knowledge of data models, databases, and GIS data management
Strong proficiency in Swedish, both spoken and written
It is meritorious if you also have experience with:
Implementation or migration of GIS systems
FME for data processing and automation
Project management
Mapping and/or updating geographic data
Basic programming skills (Python, SQL)
Working with road databases
The public sector or municipal operations
We are looking for someone who is self-reliant and structured in your work style, capable of independently driving your tasks forward and managing complex workflows. For us, it is crucial that you are meticulous and highly quality-conscious, as precision is fundamental to the success of our operations. Additionally, you should be development-oriented, driven to find smarter solutions and continuously improve our processes, while also possessing strong collaboration skills and thriving in building good relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Additional Information
This is a temporary position starting in January 2027 for one year, with a possible extension beyond January 2028.
We plan to conduct first interviews in weeks 46 and 47, after which candidates progressing in the process will be invited to a second interview. In this recruitment process, advancing candidates may be asked to complete psychological assessments.
