Summary of Duties
The Surveying and Mapping Unit provides official municipal surveying and mapping services to support the City’s planning, development, and infrastructure activities, enabling the successful delivery of City-led construction projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing, compiling, interpreting, and creating official survey plans and mapping products. This includes addressing complex issues such as property rights—including dominant and servient interests—geodetic control, digital mapping data, and official re-survey principles—to produce land survey plans, geographic base maps, sketches, and drawings, ensuring compliance with relevant provincial laws and regulations. The role requires the use of advanced interactive computer software to produce these deliverables.
Education and Experience
Completion of a three-year college program in geomatics or a related field, with a focus on official surveying
Minimum of four (4) years of experience compiling survey and mapping data
Certifications and Accreditations
Certification as a Surveying Technologist by the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS) is an asset

Current GIS technologies and remote sensing tools
Digital mapping methods and procedures

Coordinate systems and datums
Relevant health and safety legislation, including worker rights and obligations
Skills and Competencies
Ability to compile and produce digital maps, plans, and sketches using CAD software
Proficiency with interactive graphics workstations
Competence in using automated plotters and computer peripherals
Ability to compile and evaluate survey observations
Skill in applying complex mathematical equations
Capacity to analyze deeds, easements, rights-of-way, and property information, and integrate them into plans
Ability to understand software suites and their user manuals
Knowledge of data management best practices to ensure proper inventory and archival of final products
Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
Diplomacy, initiative, reliability, analytical thinking, and precision
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
Participation in team meetings to share best practices and ensure consistency of project deliverables
Capacity to mentor and provide on-the-job training to junior team members
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors to resolve official survey issues

Starting Salary: New hires may begin at up to 95% of the initial salary rate, per collective agreement
