Function Summary
The Surveying and Mapping unit provides municipal land surveying and mapping services to support the City’s planning, development, and infrastructure activities, enabling the successful delivery of City-led construction projects.
The incumbent is responsible for analyzing and compiling survey data, and producing official survey plans, planimetric and topographic base maps, assembly schematics, and sketches using graphic software and computer-aided drafting techniques, while ensuring compliance with relevant provincial legislation.
Education and Experience
Completion of a 2-year post-secondary program in geomatics or a related field, with a specialization in official surveying.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience compiling survey data.
Certifications and Accreditations
Certification as a Surveying Technologist by the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS) is an asset.

Digital mapping methods and procedures

MTM and UTM coordinate systems
Planimetric control networks

Relevant health and safety legislation, including worker rights and responsibilities
General knowledge of the City’s and Department’s health and safety policies and procedures
Skills and Competencies
Ability to compile and produce digital maps, plans, and sketches
Proficiency in using interactive graphics workstations
Ability to compile and evaluate survey observations
Ability to understand software suites and their user manuals
Ability to analyze land transfer documents, easements, and property information, and integrate them into plans
Proficiency in using automated plotters and computer peripherals
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors to resolve official survey issues
Attention to detail and precision
Tact, initiative, reliability
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships
Important Information
Language Requirements: Working knowledge of spoken, read, and written English
Starting Salary: New hires may begin at 95% of the initial salary rate, in accordance with the collective agreement.
Alternative Qualifications: Relevant experience and recognized education, supported by a service record demonstrating satisfactory performance and demonstrated aptitude, may be considered in lieu of formal education requirements.
